Topic: The New Landscape Building a Globally Integrated Company and IBM Procurement Transformation
Speaker: Louis R. Ferretti, Director, Center of Excellence - Environmental Compliance and Supply Chain Social Responsibility, World-Wide Engineering, IBM Integrated Supply Chain

The world has changed and it is never going back to the way it was. Thus, for business to not only survive, but thrive, companies must consider new ways to market, manage, staff and lead in a flat world. "Flat world" is a metaphor for viewing the world as level in terms of commerce and competition, as in a level playing field - one where all competitors have an equal opportunity. IBM has recognized this shift and has put in place a strategy of Globally Integrated the Enterprise (GIE), aimed at replacing vertical hierarchies with a horizontally integrated model, to provide a range of offerings and services that can best serve IBM clients world wide.

Global Integration is about doing the right work in the right places at the right cost. It's not simply labor arbitrage. It's not simply lower-cost skills. You must have the capabilities in the right places and the systems, processes and discipline to integrate the skills and systems and make them work for the client. Across the company, IBM took core processes and functions that were once managed regionally and shifted them to a globally integrated model. This discussion will highlight key elements of IBM's GIE strategy and why it makes sense to move beyond being a multinational company. Also to be discussed is IBM's Procurement Transformation and how its present objectives support IBM's overall GIE strategy.

Louis R. Ferretti is Director, Center of Excellence - Environmental Compliance and Supply Chain Social Responsibility, World-Wide Engineering, IBM Integrated Supply Chain. He is responsible for ensuring that all governmental regulations world-wide for product compliance are met on time. In April 2008 he took on the additional responsibility of Supply Chain Social Responsibility focusing on suppliers in emerging geographies. Mr. Ferretti has over 20 years experience having held management positions in engineering, procurement, materials, supply/demand, business transformation outsourcing and a host of special global initiatives such as Pandemic Readiness and Y2 Contingency Planning. His broad experience was gained from managing and leading large, complex global initiatives and from domestic and international assignments.
